Saturday is a special day ... it’s the day we take pictures of course.

On Saturdays Anna is lucky enough to get to school. (That’s right six days a week) why you ask? She takes part in a program at OSU (Oregon State University and only the best school in Oregon) anyway she has a lot of fun. As usual when we went to pick her up I was packing my camera and took these pictures of the girls on the OSU campus. -SG

Shaun,

Excellent images...I looked at the middle one of Anna first and thought that it was out of focus...and was going to comment on it, but then I looked at the other two...and they are sharp where it mattered. (which is the eyes.) Critical focus on the eyes it paramount for portraits, especially when you have such shallow depth of field.

Speaking of depth of field...great job using a large aperture to throw the background out of focus, just enough. Really nice. Anna's picture where she is serious is much better than either of the others!

Abigail's (it is abigail isn't it?) picture is a great pose. The use of her arms as a posing tool are excellent. There is too much flash, which is causing her face to be washed out without much detail. One way to take care of that is to use the flash compensation button and reduce the output of the flash by at least a stop and use the flash as a fill to balance the daylight.

The button will have a flash symbol next to a +/- sign. When you push the button, take it toward the -1 side.

One thing that you can do, and you did with the serious picture of Anna is to get a little lower yourself...for truly great portraits you don't want to have the lens be any higher than about 3 inches higher than eye level...unless of course you are breaking the rule in an extreme manner... I really like them, and would think that they may look good in B/W as well.

I'm impressed Shaun, you've got a great eye.

One other thing...on the bottom picture, of Anna, the vertical line next to her face corresponds perfectly with the dark line on the right. It's not as noticeable with your watermark on there, but it frames the image almost perfectly...it may not have been a conscience decision when you were taking the picture, but it works and when you know something works, you can look to use it in the future.
